The Nokia N96 - 3G Smart-phone
The Nokia N96 is a superbly designed 3G Smart-phone that features a dual opening mechanism and is destined to be Nokia’s next flagship mobile phone. The N96 is a family member of the very well liked N series range by Nokia that includes the extremely able Nokia N95 3G Smart-phone and the latter version, the Nokia N95 8GB. The very clever dual opening design will greatly assist the user to slide open the handset and have their every need met.
The colour TFT display screen on the N96 is a large 6.1 inch diagonal display (2.8 inches)and displays up to sixteen million colours on QVGA LCD screen and the screen resolutions are 240 x 320 pixels.
The N96 3G Smart-phone comes jam packed full of the day-to-day useful features and other cool features that the user can use whilst on the move. The casing of the Nokia N96 is slightly larger and more weighty than its predecessor but is still quite compact considering all what has been packed into it technology wise. The dimensions of the N96 are 103mm in height by 55mm in width by 18mm in depth and the weight of the phone is 125 grams. This very classy 3G Smart-phone has 16 Gbytes of built in internal memory (double the N95 latest version), 128 Mbytes of RAM and 256 Mbytes of system memory. The handset has support for a MicroSD™ memory card if the user chooses to increase the amount of storage they have on the phone for their music and downloads. The N96 main competitors are the Samsung i8510 INNOV8, Samsung M8800 Pixon and the C905.
The Nokia N96 - Music Player
The N96 comes kitted out with a music player that features a built in FM stereo that comes complete with RDS allowing the user to view the music information that they are listening to on the fantastic large display screen. The huge internal memory built into this phone will allow you to store 3500 songs, the same as the Apple iTouch. The only advantage the iPhone had over the rest of the mobile phone market was internal memory, now that Nokia have hit back with the N96 this is no longer the case. The N96 supports a Nokia Internet Radio and a Visual Radio. The music player’s features allow the user to create play-lists and listen to their favourite music. The user can select their play mode and view their playing lists and albums in great colour. And with the music player, having an audio equalizer listening to your favourite tunes will be a great music mobile experience as the sound quality will be excellent.
The Nokia N96 - Camera
The owner of this great handset will never need a separate digital camera as the Nokia N96 is all that will be needed not only for the uses it has a mobile phone but as a highly capable digital camera.
The Nokia N96 comes with a fantastic built in five mega-pixel camera (2,592 x 1,944 pixels) complete with an array of settings, functions and options that a standard digital camera would provide you with. The Carl Zeiss optics Tessar lens is crystal clear and features auto focus and an auto exposure feature. The dual LED flash will definitely brighten up those shots that have been snapped in the dark or dimly lit environments. Photos can be stored in either JPEG or EXIF format. The user will be able to adjust the settings making sure the user can take the perfect picture every time. It has been rumoured that a 6 mega pixel version maybe release, but we will have to wait and see if that materialises.
The Nokia N96 - Video Camera
The N96 also supports video recording so the user can always capture a special moment whenever and wherever they are with this marvellous handset. The user can do video streaming and play back all their recordings on the large colourful display screen. The video clips captured can be stored, edited, shared, deleted or even transferred to other compatible devices. The N96 features the fantastic element called the video stabilizer. This will ensure the user will capture a steady and wobble free piece of moving video footage and with MPEG4 video format. The video function also features a light so that any footage taken in the dark or dull environment will still be recorded with quality.
The Nokia N96 - 3G video calling
There is a second camera on the N96 and this allows the user to participate in 3G video calling. This camera is a VGA camera and is subtly situated at the front of the phone. The concept of this is to allow users to call each other and view each other face to face whilst talking this will work if the other user's phone has this capability.
The Nokia N96 - TV Player with BBC iPlayer support
In addition, the stunning N96 has DVB-H live TV broadcasting. This feature allows the user to watch live TV broadcastings while being on the move and access videos via the browser (will be great for youtube!). However, TV play will kill your battery in 4 hours.
The Nokia N96 - GPS (Satellite Navigation)
There is also a built in GPS receiver and a navigation system so once the user keys in their desired destination the handset will give systematic directions to their destination. The GPS navigation system will provide its owner with satellite pictures of their desired destination as well as the location information and 150 maps can also be downloaded.
The Nokia N96 - Connectivity
The Nokia N96 3G Smart-phone is packed full of the latest technologies, including 3G HSDPA technology for fast and high-speed efficiency. There is the EDGE technology that will provide the user with high-speed data transfer rates and WLAN Wi-Fi technology allows for a great wireless connection a fast broadband speeds. The Bluetooth® wireless technology that includes A2DP allows the user to enjoy a wireless connection experience. A USB connection will allow a great-cabled connection between other compatible devices. The N96 comes with a Symbian operating system that it is complete with S60 software.
The battery life is never great on 3G smartphones packed full of features, and the more features added seems to shorten the battery life. Apparently the N96 when fully charged will roughly provide up to three hours talk time or up to two hundred and twenty hours of stand by time, but I will be prepared to charge it every night.
The Nokia N96 - Internet
The Nokia N96 has an incorporated Web Browser that is complete with a mini maps feature this will allow for a fantastic Internet encounter. The Nokia web browser supports both HTML and JavaScript, Combining this with the TV functionality allows support for Flash videos. The HTML mobile Internet can also be enjoyed that comes complete with an RSS reader facility.
The Nokia N96 - Messaging
The messaging services will be a great way to stay in contact with friends, family, the office and even the work colleagues by using the fantastic services that are available. The services include text messaging (SMS), multi-media messaging (MMS), instant messaging and an emailing service. The email service fully supports SMTP, IMAP4 and POP3 emailing formats and also features a highly practical attachment file. This service is ideal for those who are always on the move.

Okay, but seen betterI've just sent my second N96 back for a cash refund - and having read the negative reviews on here, I have to agree, it truly was a fully loaded £535 breeze block, nothing but hassle if you are looking for a reliable machine.
Applications freezing/locking, getting itself all hot (very hot), poor battery life when running applications...need I say more.
The truly sad thing is, I decided to give Nokia a go after a mate recommended the N95, "let's get the N96" was the cry - it has to be better, well no, think again young Skywalker, it's not better, it's very, very bad. Pre-ordered too, oh the humiliation !!
Even Nokia, they were clueless on the technical support side and it is interesting to note that one reviewer says they have a fix - better get it out soon Nokia, or everyone will be sending them back.
Sounds to me that they just had to beat the 3G iphone / Blackberry Storm / Samsung i8510 for the big pre-Christmas rush ?
My advice to anyone who's got it secretly stashed and wrapped for a loved one - get it out and play with it, see if you can handle the crashing and poor battery life.
A real shame Nokia, I for one will not be using you again, it's back to old faithful reliable Sammy Samsung for me till I do my next bout of research before wasting even more of my valuable time on what would seem to be untested goods... 2/10 from me. Don't buy.

Don't buy it Bought the N96 and it is like pre-paying for a five star hotel only to get some flea-bitten crap hotel that you're scared to sleep in... this is an unbelievably bad phone... I had the N95 8gb and thought that was perfection... reliable, incredible, solid, gorgeous... and so, assuming that companies progress, ordered the N96... it's appalling... slow, so full of bugs that it requires a total fumigation and overhaul.... It's on par with the vile Motorola Z8 --- Evil Phone-- which would heat up like an oven for no apparent reason and turn itself off... If you have the N95 8gb, keep it, make a shrine to it, and pray that the powers that be at Nokia get their act together and realise that an upgraded phone means better not worse!
The most appalling thing of all is that a fix has already been designed and Nokia has not released it. How arrogant are they? They should be working night and day to keep their consumers onside and doing whatever they can to improve this product.

Good mobile phonehello all :-) ive been very interested reading all your reviews, im now on my second N96 after only 14 days luckly the shop was understanding and reasonable. mine had a issue with the maps application all of a sudden and it stoped working and i depend on this quite often, i do belive the N95 8GB is better as this one is quite slow &freezes more often, other than that i havent experienced any other problems with the new 1 i just really hope it lasts i dont fancy listing all my music N picz again.lol. ive got 2 much.
remember if you want your n96 2 run fast keep the phone memory clear and clear the cache after you browse, take it easy and try not to button bash and run too many apps at the same time ..... the internet is a joy to surf and the styling and colours are very nice i think. yes i know it feels like your gonna drop it and the back cover is flimsey but it looks very smart and up to date. ive put a screen protector on it so the lcd screen stays unscratched and im thinking about getting a case.
battery life is the same as the n95 8gb but this dosent really effect me as i have a car charger and a spare battery not 2 sure about the power saving mode???? what difference does it make??? What does it do???? i really dont know!!
the 16gb memory is really great as i have nearly a thousand songs and sevral episodes of family guy, 2 films and endless pictures its still not even half way full.. i dont know why there is a memory card slot i think thats a bit much it would of been much more apprieciated in the n958gb...
They could of made the speakers louder though but not a big problem as you can use bluetooth speakers or plug it in to anything you want. The internal speaker is very clear too everyone can hear my convosations if i dont turn the volume down...
The data transfer from pc/laptop with the new usb is incredibly quick and the cameras works fine to me no problem there if anything there tooo clear lol.
ive heard its got some kind of touch screen or something if anyone knows anymore about this please let me know as im clueless to this because the insruction manual is absolutly useless and tells you nothing...
Love watching shows on it, its sounds crisp and is very clear and easy to watch with that kickstand. Sat nav is the same as the 8gb just a upgraded version gps signal is always strong hate the mans voice though.
overall it definetly could of been better and more durable but i suppose it will do for now as i got it cheap as a upgrade, would never pay more than £150 for it(only if it was gold plated lol) ...they really need to hurry up and make windows live messenger availible and sharpen up the firmware, i do hope they bring out a upgraded version with better software and if anyone from nokia reads this MORE DOESNT NECECERALY MEAN BETTER!!! So any body thats thinking of buying dont be put off it is a BRILLIANT phone if you dnt set your standerds to high or pay though the nose for it. Don't buy it Having now had two N96 phones because of having to send them back and now awaiting my third I am a little fed up with reading so many glowing reports. I've had 2 N95’s and was delighted with them, when the N96 was released I really thought that this was the 'end all' of all phones.
I list below just some of the problems that I have found.
1. I have had to return 2 N96’s because the phone stopped ringing even at the loudest volume, I have reported this to the technical team at Vodafone but they don't seem to have a cure. I note that one other person reports the same problem but I can’t find out how they cured it
2. The N95 has a 2.8/5.6 lens in the camera, the N96 2.8/5.2 - Why has this gone down?
3. Both of my N96 phones have locked up which has caused me to have to remove the battery and restart the software. This has happened when there are 2 applications running i.e. radio and incoming call.
4. I am very irritated that the N96 does not allow you to zoom in on pictures, there appears to be no facility to do this which was perfectly easy with the N95.
5. The N96 is so slow compared to the N95. My first one kept reporting that the memory was full, no music only 130 pictures. 8GB???
6. I synch my phone with the operators time however my 8 o’clock alarm goes off some 20 seconds after the time signal?
7. The earpiece quality is a lot worse than the N95, it seems to be muffled and loses the crisp quality of the N95.
8. And as for the ridiculous headphones – asymmetric and too short, completely useless. I’ve had to go out and buy some sensible ones for £1.99
9. Why have Nokia gone back to a silver/black design, I really loved the all black N95
Good points….
Well there’s not many. Compared to the N95 I am totally disappointed with the N96 - I loved the N95 but this new N96 is just pants!!

Good mobile phoneI have had my N96 for 1 week now and overall I am loving it. This is not a technical review it is just my opinions or some of the features i use most on the phone.
I am impressed with the camera - it loads instantly and takes quick high quality photos even when the subject is moving or far away and your using the zoom. There is no long pause when taking a picture between pressing the button and the phone processing the image which has annoyed me on previous phones.
The big screen is great especially when watching videos from the bbc i player which is a brill thing to have on a phone. The kick stand is a genius idea and i find the sound quality fine.
Had no problem linking with my computer, sharing files via the cable provided or blue tooth is quick and easy.
A few reviews I have read have commented on the phone feeling slippery or the tacky cheap buttons on the key pad - this hasnt bothered me one bit. The phone is comfortable to hold and the key pad is fine for speedy texting.
Music player is fine for my usage.
Now for the negative bits - I have lots and lots of photos on my phone and when i want to view them they take quite a while to load which is no big deal really just a bit of a pain.
The auto screen rotate is a bit sensitive but that can be turned off. But my biggest problem with the n96 is the back light going off really quickly, when reading a long text this really annoys me. I'm sure there must be something I can do to fix this but there is no help in the instruction manual and nothing on the nokia site so for now I am just dealing with it.
Overall I am very happy with my new phone and I would definately recommend to a friend or indeed anyone who chooses to read my review :)

AverageLovely looking phone but it didn't ring (until I found the fix on the nokia website which means turning off some 3d sound thing - so what's the point!) and the built in earpiece is muffled so anyone who rings me sounds like they are talking through cotton wool. Hopefully a replacement will fix the problem but finding the time to go back to the shop is going to be difficult!

I WANT ONE!! I have finally got my hands on the much awaited Nokia N96 which I have been waiting until its release in the UK which coincided with my contract being available for an upgrade. Now I have finally got my hands on the Nokia N96 and here is my opinion.
I have used the Nokia N95 for the year and a half since it was release Q2 – 2007. I have been a very satisfied customer of it despite its few drawbacks. I have been using almost all the features given on it, have been using TomTom installed on it and have been looking forward for the N96. I am actually pleased though there aren’t many significant Differences. My comparison is against the Nokia N95.
Positives:
Larger Screen than the Nokia N95 and is very good. Would be very good when I get around installing TomTom on this ?
Pleasant look and feel. Similar to the N95 but there is a slight difference felt. The Finish of the phone has attempted to go into iPhone territory. Looks nice, however as a person who doesn’t like finger marks on my phone, it is not that great. Easily shows finger marks. However I don’t bother as I tend to wipe it all the time. After 1 ½ years of using the N95 I haven’t got one single scratch mark on it.
Has a kick stand accommodating for video / tv viewing. Speakers positioned accordingly.
The phone though looks like a posh toy, it does have a feel of durability on it. So I am hoping it is as durable as my N95 after the rough throws I have put on it.
I like the idea of DVB-H TV on the phone. Not got around using it yet, will be nice when I do, hopefully.
Negatives:
Performance wise, there is a slight decline observed, and when I researched online, quite questionably it seems as if they have put in a processor with lower clock speed. I can’t understand why Nokia would downgrade on the processor when the Nokia N95 was not the greatest of performers anyway. However it is certainly not a showstopper, but an upgrade of the processor would have been very welcome.
The Hands-free kit cannot control radio channels. You have to press the button on the phone to change channels. As a person who listens to the radio while walking to work with the phone in the pocket and switching channels using the handsfree kit, it is a total let down.
The USB connector is nto the same as the Nokia N95 which used a generic Micro USB cable. The N96 has a slightly different one. So you have to have your Nokia N96 USB Cable now and cannot borrow it off a similar device like the N95 was able to.
I am extremely surprised why Nokia stuck to the same battery as the N95 (the BL-5F) which was heavily criticised for it. I am used to the routine of recharging the phone everyday and having a spare battery on full charge at all times. However I expected the N96 to have improved the battery. The N95-8GB was given the BL-6F which was supposedly more lasting than the BL-5F. I wonder why they went back to the BL-5F.
Sounds are not as great as the Nokia N95. The Nokia default ring tones are nicer, however is very softer. So I am compelled to use my choice of Mp3 song as the ring tone. The Volume of the speakers are not as crisp and sharp and loud as the N95.
The back cover is too light weighted plastic. I fear I might hurt it easily.
Overall, I am excited about the phone nad intend to put to test over the next 18 months into my contract and I hope Nokia has upped the standards I have had in my mind on my good old N95 which I am going to miss after 18 months of great service. Love you N95, welcome N96!

Don't buy it OK..AVOID THIS PHONE. Received my N96 upgrade from my n95 8gb today and its gone straight back in the box and being returned. The phone is so slow compared to my n958gb.What the review above fails to mention is the fact that the processor is slower on the n96 and it is also missing the 3d chip used for gaming and other apps such as gps mapping. Look on Youtube for n96 vs n95 and look at the framerate that the preinstalled racing game runs at. the n96 feels very platic and flimsy. Also the camera takes very pale looking pictures (agreed this may be fixed in a firmware update).. Yes it has 16gb and looks pretty but that really is the only improvement. If you have an n95 then wait before you upgrade!!! I've had just about every N series phone and the N96 is the only one i've been really dissapointed with. Okay, but seen betterToday I got a N96 and surely tomorrow I am going to return it. The reasons are:
1. N95 slides on and off more easily and naturally than N96 whose sliding action is uncomfortable.
2. N95 buttons/switches are so well-placed that N96 is no match to it; for example - the switch on-off button is so placed in N96 that it is not possible use this without touching the speaker volume switch.
3. The data connection cable connection slot and the insertion lug can not be easily plugged in without hassle.
4. This is always a hang-out phone, no matter what GB it may have as its memory.
5. The right earphone almost always stops and transmit no sound.
6. Sound quality of the speaker when calls are received are really poor!
This phone is possibly one of the very bad examples of what Nokia has ever produced! This will waste your time, and increase hassles!

Also the screen is now flush with the outer casing which just leaves it too exposed to scratching. The shiney black finish just gets smothered in finger marks until the thing looks a mess. I WANT ONE!! This is a brilliant phone and in some ways a significant upgrade from the N95 which I had before. The software is much improved and the additional memory is welcome as is the reintroduction of an SD slot which was left out of the N95 8GB. It has also proved to be wholly reliable in the albeit relatively short time that I have had it.
What I would criticise is that the build appears to be markedly inferior to the N95 and the keyboard in particular is very poorly designed. Not a patch on the N95. Some keys need a lot of pressure to activate them. A particular problem wiht the camera key which whilst clever in that if held it will activate the camera needs to be pressed so hard to trigger the shutter that it is nearly bound to induce shake.
The USB connection has been changed to the latest mini type which means that it is less common than that on the N95. Further, it completely defeats me as to why Nokia has not taken the opportunity to implement charging via USB as against requiring a separate cable.
Other then the above minor matters I fail to ssee how anyone buying an N96 could be other than massively impressed and for that reason simply do not recognise some of the criticisms made by others in their postings.

Okay, but seen betterHello everybody...
I am giving u the detailed technical n practical review of Nokia N96.
In a sentense... ITS A BIG SHAME.
I've been using Nokia N82 for about 8 months. Got my new N96 few days back but could keep it with me for 2 days. Went to the market and sold it tack. It was just the waste of money and time.

Okay, but seen betterBought it on the Tuesday. Had nothing but problems with connecting to a computer, the phone software is flakey to say the least, and locks up regularly when trying to sort out anything to do with connecting via wifi or bluetooth. The keylock button doesn't prevent the keys from activating if pressed when the slider is open, then closed. GPS is a waste of time, cannot access satellites outdoors, let alone inside. This must be a bad sample as I cannot believe Nokia would let something as bugged as this out for it's flagship mobile phone.

After a day of charging, it fails to turn on, have sent it back to T Mobile for a replacement. I fail to do it injustice as it may be from a batch of duff handsets, lets see what the replacement turns out like.

I think this phone looks great and i wanted it until I read reviews on it, because I use my current phone mainly for the camra, So im looking at getting the Sony Erricson C905 over this phone , but is the camra really that bad on the N96? Because I love the sound of everyother part of the phone =/ x

Averagethis is my second N96, the first one was replaced due to a faulty ring volume. i was not impressed. anyway, the second is working fine. but like the other users, i am also getting pale photos when the flash is used, the images are fuzzy and not as clear as my previous N93, i think the auto focus is not locking properly. but the pictures are fine when the flash is not used, but it must be well lit. so dont try taking pictures in a night club...
i waited 2 months for this phone to be released, and i was not that impressed when it arrived. the key pad, its has a plastic feel, and if you have long nails (not me) you will find using the numbers 1 to 3 difficult to use as the case gets in the way. does not have a solid feel like the iphone.
the specs on this N96 is outstanding, but let down slightly by its keypad and camera. i still think its worth buying, but dont think you are getting the best phone on the market.

I WANT ONE!! on friday the 3rd of october i took delivery of my brand new dark grey Nokia N96(not the awful light grey one) and was blown away not only with ease of use but also functionallity. i have a Blackberry as company phone and was also offered a i phone to trial by work for its web features which after a week wound me right up and i found it a complete joke and should only be bought by people who have lots of time & no freinds as it takes forever to do things as the touch screen does not accomodate mens fingers
the Nokia N96 is just so easy and affective in its use and needs also make sure you check out all the possible symbian downloads for the phone as some are really good i use the phone for all media features and phone features and have found no problems with this the only thing i have not used is the maps application and have no iterest in doing so as i have sat nav in my car i have heard that the istallation of this may slow down your phone some what so dont use it unless a really needed
i hope this ha helped you in making the correct decision

Great replacement for the original N95 but not such a step up from the later 8gb version. If touch screen is your thing then this is obviously not for you but for lovers of a standard interface this is excellent.
